Echoes of the Past

Enraged by the destruction of Iraqi history and artifacts (did you know that the Iraqi National Library was burned *twice*!), Keith Watenpaugh was part of a group of academics that went to Iraq in June of 2003 to get some idea of the damage. Keith Watenpaugh has a unique perspective on what's happening there because his main are of study is Iraq between the Wars, when the area was run by the Brits and French for the League of Nations. His evaluation? Well the title is America's Incompetent Colonialism.

The CPA?s colonial culture has limited its effectiveness on behalf of the Iraqi people and thus the US taxpayer is not getting a good value for its billions of dollars. And while unique elements of the CPA have made significant contributions to the rebuilding of Iraqi society, here I note especially the work of John Russell in the recovery of Iraq?s ancient heritage, those successes are not balanced by the abuses, corruption, cronyism and incompetence on the other side of the ledger. In part this has been caused by the exportation of domestic US politics to the Green Zone and the appointment of individuals whose sense of Iraqi, Arab, and Islamic cultures (if they have any at all) is shaped by a narrow partisan, cultural or religious agenda - and in some cases the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Meanwhile we learn that, rather than recruit the best and brightest (and possibly Arabic speakers) for the effort in Iraq, the US government plucked resumes off the Heritage Institute's website. So instead of say, unemployed telecommunication engineers who might have helped rebuild Iraq (like, oh say, me), we get

...The 28-year-old daughter of neoconservative pundit Michael Ledeen and a recently minted MBA...
...Todd Baldwin, 28, a legislative aide for Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), thought the opportunity was too good to pass up. John Hanley, 24, a Web site editor, wanted to break into the world of international relations. Anita Greco, 25, a former teacher, and Casey Wasson, 23, a recent college graduate in government, just needed jobs.

Good Luck, kids. Sure hope you know when the contractor you've hired to turn up mobile switching center is actually telling you the truth about the dialing plans, and not accidentally holding back a batch of numbers that can't be traced to sell on the black market.

Comments:
